It’s possible that the water pump gasket where it mounts to the engine is what’s leaking, but it could also be the seal on the water pump shaft. The water pump on the 5.7 liter 3UR is on the front of the engine but is challenging to access due to the coolant crossover pipes and lines that run to the thermostat housing that bolts to the the front of the water pump. A coolant leak can indicate many failures, but if it’s coolant on the front of the engine, it’s often a water pump leak. Often the water pump bearing is making a growling noise at the same time. Do I have to pull the water pump to fix it Thanks, Scotty Reply Like 2 03-07-2004, 08:52 PM doccamel Senior User Join Date: Mar 2004 Posts: 246 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts Is it just leaking around the head of the bolt. Always pour some coolant around the internal seal before turning. Coolant leak at water pump bolt On my 88 5.0 I have a coolant leak at one of the upper bolts at the water pump. While a small, tiny, old amount of pink buildup is normal, any dark or obviously wet coolant leaking is not. There are three main causes of coolant coming out of the weep hole: 1) someone spun the shaft when new and dry. The above indicated leak is from the weep hole that allows whatever coolant that does leak past the front pulley bearing seal to be diverted away from the pulley. Coolant may be leaking around the water pump through the weep holes on the casing.
